  Speaker Profile : David Shapiro  

David Shapiro joined Max Pollak and Freemantle, a member of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1972, shortly after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. He was appointed senior partner in 1988. The firm underwent many changes including a merger with Frankel Kruger Vinderine in 1990 and the sale to French banking giant Societe Generale in 1996. In 2000 the private client business was sold to Sasfin Bank; David remained on as Managing Director of SG Securities (Pty) Ltd, a brokerage that focused on institutional and international business. In 2002 the business was closed as part of Societe Generale’s withdrawal from global emerging markets.
After a brief stretch at CorpCapital and Barnard Jacobs Mellet, David joined Sasfin Frankel Pollak in February 2005 as a consultant, where he manages private client money and runs two unit trusts – The Sasfin TwentyTen Fund and The Sasfin Equity Fund.

David comments daily on the stock market on East Coast Radio, Radio 702 and Alec Hogg’s SAFm Market Update. He also appears weekly on Summit and CNBC and writes a regular business column for The Times, a daily newspaper.

David has been married to Linda, a school teacher, for 37 years. They have three adult children and two grandchildren. He enjoys a daily run, drawing, collecting art and watching sport.
